4 Reasons To Take Your Workout Outside

Posted by Laura

The weather is (fingers crossed) getting warmer - check out our 4 reasons why it's great to workout outside this summer.

1. You'll be able to run faster

As we know, British Summertime can be unpredictable and sometimes pretty chilly in the morning. Still, grit your teeth, get out of bed and start running - running  in the cold trains your body to use oxygen more efficiently. Research from Northern Arizona University found that after regular cold workouts, you can add 29% to your running speed. (Which is an even better excuse to continue into Autumn and Winter!)

2. It increases your energy

Find yourself flagging mid-workout? Then take it outdoors. A study found that exercising al fresco has an overall positive effect on vitality, your sense of enthusiasm, aliveness, and energy.

3. You burn more calories

When you workout indoors you're making things a bit easier for yourself. Exercising outdoors means you have to work against the weather and mixed terrain, increasing your energy expenditure and your calorie burn.

4. It makes us happier

Summer is the perfect time to take your weather outdoors so you can let your body soak up vital Vitamin D. Just 20 minutes is enough to help combat against seasonal depression. Studies have shown that participants who exercise outdoors have increased energy and satisfaction levels and decreased levels of tension, depression and anger.

I'm at the forefront of finding out and creating awesome stuff about health, fitness and happiness and when I'm not at work I love nothing more than pizza and prosecco in the sun with friends. What motivates me? Knowing that life is short...
