5 Easy Ways To Feel Happy Today

Posted by Laura

We've trawled the internet to find the best scientific backed ways to feel happier today!

1. Listen to music

When you listen to music (especially music that you feel emotionally connected to) studies have found that your brain releases dopamine, a chemical closely associated with both motivation and addiction. Next time you're planning a gym session or even if you're feeling a bit anxious before a busy day, listen to a playlist full of motivating music to push you just that little bit harder or relax and inspire you!  Need inspiration for your playlist? Check out Move's favourite workout songs!

2. Exercise

The ultimate endorphin booster, working up a sweat is great and sure to leave a smile on your face. We know that when you're feeling tired or a bit down, working out can be the last thing on your mind but it almost always leaves you with that warm, happy glow (and the feeling that you can take on the world!) When we exercise our brain thinks we are under stress, so releases chemicals and endorphins in order to counter this and any pain it thinks we might be experiencing. As well as blocking any feelings of discomfort, they can also result in a feeling of euphoria!

3. Enjoy the great outdoors!

Getting outside and in the sun isn't just a great mood lifter-it's also great for your health! Sunshine provides a natural source of vitamin D, which helps prevent cancer, inflammation and obesity. So why not take a stroll at lunch time today (unless it's raining of course!) Exercising outdoors is also great, check out why here!

4. Spend time with your friends

Spending quality time with your loved ones is a sure fire way to raise a smile and make you feel happy. Studies have shown that during periods of stress, spending time with your friends can help improve your overall mood.  Even better is enjoying exercise and activity with your friends. Not only does training with a friend improve the chances of sticking to a regular routine, it also makes your workouts more fun, fast and focused. If you're a Mover you can give your friends 10 days free of MoveGB to workout with you!

5. Sleep more

Who doesn't love the feeling of waking up refreshed and ready to tackle the day? There's a scientific reason why we feel so good after a long period of shut eye - those of us who only sleep for 4 or less hours a night have been shown to experience lower feelings of optimism. Get some tips with our 7 ways to sleep to better health.

After 3 years of excess at uni took a serious toll on my waistline and wellbeing, I found that a love for strength training, HIIT and spin classes were key to keeping me healthy and happy. I'm at the forefront of finding out and creating awesome stuff about health, fitness and happiness and when I'm not at work I love nothing more than pizza and prosecco in the sun with friends.
