The alarm goes off, I look at my sports bra and my leggings laying on the chair and quickly grab them, ready to hit the mat. However, I am not going for my usual ten-minute walk to the gym.
Over the past few weeks, my journey to my workout has only been a few stair steps away...
I still roll out my mat the night before, somehow preparing for a ritual that kicks off my morning the right way. Movement is something we have always craved as humans, and right now, more than ever, we are looking for creative ways to get movement into our day.
What you need to know about starting home workouts right in 2020
I am experienced in the area, in the sense that I have worked out at home for years, since moving far away from the city.
I found my routine, I found what I love doing and I created my own pace for it. Yet, so many people have now embraced the move at home revolution.
However, it can be incredibly overwhelming for first-starters.
There is a lot of choice, and we have a lot of options at our fingertips, yet, like good old Benjamin Franklin said once “fail to plan, plan to fail”.
Some days, all you can commit to is 10 minutes, and that is okay.
Especially when first dipping your toes in the world of home workouts and online fitness classes, creating a routine for yourself is key. In order to do that, there are a few things to consider for first-starters kicking off their home workout journey.
Find your own pace
When you are first starting out working out from home, the lack of accountability can be challenging. Also, the mere fact you are not following the routine that got you to head to the gym in the first place could really hinder your motivation.
There are a variety of ways you can keep yourself motivated, Always remember that the small rituals like wearing your usual workout outfit - including trainers - is just like wearing your workout superhero cape, and can get you in the right frame of mind : )
Instead of pushing yourself, if you are still new to moving regularly, ease in with online yoga classes, as yoga can introduce you to movement without putting too much strain on your joints or challenge you with unfamiliar moves.
Especially when taking a live-stream online class, you can tap into the most valuable ally, the instructor. Your instructor doubles as your cheerleader, motivating you as well as giving you advice on moves you may not be familiar with.
Once you feel more confident, you can up your level with 30-minute online HIIT classes to challenge yourself.
Keep it fun
Another incredibly important aspect of home workouts is keeping them fun. I personally love online dance classes (albeit my routines may not be TikTok-worthy just yet. Ahem.).
There is a really rich variety of online classes available for various levels including ballet, lyrical and contemporary dance, or why not get your flatmates (or those you happen to be in lockdown with!) involved in a tango class? It takes two, after all.
Fitness classes and different activities are being added on Move At Home in huge numbers every day allowing you to experience a whole new world of workouts - including the weird and the wonderful! Once you feel a bit more daring, you can always get out of your comfort zone and try something like twerking or Burlexercise. Now that these classes are live-streamed in or on-demand in your home, there is no longer the barrier of doing this in public first.
Another great type of activity for people looking to have some fun is online Zumba classes.
“You’ll expend energy without feeling like you’re working out because you’re having so much fun,” says Zumba Education Specialist Maria Teresa Stone. “The beauty of Zumba is that the routines are easy to follow and most people catch on pretty fast.” Amen to that, Teresa.
If you are still missing the social aspect of your workouts, live-streaming classes can introduce a whole new level of interaction which certainly helps when you’re stuck at home.
Create your home gym
One of the biggest concerns I hear from friends and customers about online exercise is space. Not everyone can afford to find the space to recreate an Instagram-worthy home gym. But you really shouldn’t feel obliged and you absolutely don’t have to. With such a variety of online classes to choose from, you can easily find the best classes to suit you and your needs.
My top tip would be to make your home gym or workout space as welcoming and tidy as possible so that every time to step in it you feel ready to take on any challenge (just like a superhero would : )).
So you don’t have enough space to equip yourself with loads of kit. No problem. Online HIIT classes are perfect for Movers who only have trainers and a yoga mat and a corner in their living room.
Yoga is also the perfect activity you can carry out with little to no equipment - you could even practice Yin yoga in your bedroom to loosen up your muscles before an afternoon nap.
The secret to getting started
To recap, to get started with at-home workouts, you need to find your pace by creating a routine and choosing 3 or 4 classes each week that can work for your current level.
Keep it fun by adding variety and trying one new class each week - and why not ask your friends to join you for a live class over a Zoom happy hour?
Last but not least, make your classes work for you and your home. Knowing how to make the most of your own space is an invaluable way to keep motivation high, and keep showing up every week.
