Breakfast: start your day the right way...

Posted by Laura

Breakfast: everyone knows how important it is, but in reality some of us find it tricky to make healthy choices or find the time.

If you’re watching what you eat, you should never consider skipping it in the hope that it will help save calories. Put simply-it won’t. If anything you’ll find it harder to lose weight. Breakfast wakes up your metabolism after a period of fasting whilst you sleep. It helps prevent over-snacking between meals and stops you from feeling tired, moody and restless during the day.

We’ve all heard the excuses; you can’t face food early in the morning, you don’t have time to eat, you find it boring... However it’s not as hard as you think. All it takes is a little preparation and creativity! Check out our ideas for a healthy, easy breakfast.

MoveGB's favourite healthy breakfast ideas

  • Poached eggs on a wholegrain toast: 1 poached egg packs a protein punch of around 6g and averages only 70 calories. If you’re being really good, switch the wholegrain toast for rye bread. Its 100% wheat (and bloat!) free, contains 4 times more fibre than normal bread and 20% fewer calories.

  • Vegetable omelette: If you’re trying to reduce your carbohydrate intake this is a great choice. Make spinach and tomato your veggies of choice and you’re onto a winner. Superfood spinach is full of protein, vitamins and iron whilst the calcium and vitamin K in tomatoes can help create stronger bones.

  • Porridge and berries: Forget the stodgy gloop your grandma used to serve, porridge has had a modern makeover. Overnight oats are so easy to prepare and will keep you full till lunch-they even can help with muscle recovery! Top with berries for an antioxidant boost.

  • Green smoothie: If you’re feeling extra virtuous then a green smoothie is a fantastic way to get you 5 a day hit before you even leave the house! Check out our recipe for the perfect green smoothie.

So there you have it, some tasty, nutritious ways to start your day the right way- they don't call it the most important meal of the day for nothing! What's your breakfast of choice? After 3 years of excess at uni took a serious toll on my waistline and wellbeing, I found that a love for strength training, HIIT and spin classes were key to keeping me healthy and happy. I'm at the forefront of finding out and creating awesome stuff about health, fitness and happiness and when I'm not at work I love nothing more than pizza and prosecco in the sun with friends. What motivates me? Knowing that life is short...
