4 Ways to fit Exercise around a busy Schedule

Posted by Laura

Work: you either love it or hate it, but you can’t deny that a job pays the bills! If only it didn’t take up so much of our time, making it challenging to look after our fitness.

It can be tough to fit exercise around a busy schedule with many struggling to find the time or motivation to exercise around office hours, but it’s so important to maintain your work-life harmony.

Yup, here at MoveGB we say ‘work-life harmony’ instead of ‘work-life balance’, as we don’t believe that you should have to spin plates in your life. The things you love to do shouldn’t be sacrificed for the daily grind, and when your passion is keeping fit, it can feel frustrating trying to stick to a workout plan on a busy schedule.

You can stay fit despite a demanding job, so escape the desk and use our top tips to make time for fitness!

4 ways to fit exercise around a busy schedule

1. HIIT is your friend:

When you don’t have much time to dedicate to getting fit, short workouts are the way to go. Try out HIIT! High Intensity Interval Training (also known as high intensity cardio) can be blitzed out in 30-45 minute classes that are guaranteed to make you sweat, torch calories and ignite muscle.

Progress isn’t always a direct result of how many hours you spend working out - remember, quality over quantity. And with short workouts, you can easily fit them before or after work, or why not at lunch?

2. Think outside the box:

When gyms, classes or fitness activities aren’t available, time to get a touch creative!

  • Travel a lot for work and you can’t find a hotel gym? Don’t panic. Check out these great hotel room workouts and have a private session.
  • Canceled a gym session because work exhausted you? Instead of mindlessly watching TV to unwind, quickly whack out some sit-ups, squats and push-ups during the ad breaks.
  • No gym between work and home? Get off your bus a stop or two earlier and rack up some extra steps on your commute. Always keep moving - remember that.

3. Make your gym membership work harder for you:

Hey, you work pretty hard, working 9-5 (what a way to earn a living!) so it’s about time you started asking more from your gym membership. When you need flexibility and convenience with your workouts because of a busy schedule, surely a membership should be able to cater for that?

*Cue our cheeky plug*

A multi-venue MoveGB membership is awesome as you can make your workouts fit completely around your lifestyle. Want to Zumba near work at lunchtime, but love your gym close to home on the weekend? Don’t sweat it - we’ve got you covered. One membership will give you access to multiple venues, ensuring convenience is king.

4. Re-evaluate your priorities:

Oof, this is a heavy one… looking after your body is one of the most important things you can do for your wellbeing. You only get one body and you need to take care of it if you expect it to last! Sometimes something has to give - whether it’s sacrificing a pub session to fit in a workout… or finding a new job that doesn’t leave you so drained, you can hardly walk home. Moving and being active is such an important habit to keep in your life, so begin thinking of your workouts as important meetings you’ve scheduled with yourself. And bosses don’t cancel.

Still think you have no time to exercise around work? If the answer if YES, check out our 5 easy ways to add exercise into your everyday life (no gyms required)... and if the answer is NO, our job is done. *drop the mic*

After 3 years of excess at uni took a serious toll on my waistline and wellbeing, I found that a love for strength training, HIIT and spin classes were key to keeping me healthy and happy. I'm at the forefront of finding out and creating awesome stuff about health, fitness and happiness and when I'm not at work I love nothing more than pizza and prosecco in the sun with friends. What motivates me? Knowing that life is short...
