8 Ways To Make Your Resolutions Stick In 2016

Posted by Laura

It's that time of year when you've had your fill of fun and merriment and thoughts begin to turn to the year ahead.

Whilst you may feel super motivated in January, consistency is key so ithe most important thing is to find ways to create long term changes to carry you through the year and beyond.

1. 1 thing at a time

Want to lose weight, eat clean, workout more and quit drinking? It's a nice thought, but if you try to make too many changes in one hit, you're setting yourself up for failure. Pick one thing first and set small, realistic goals.

2. Create a habit

Stop focusing on results and think more about habit formation. If you're creating good habits and repeating them consistently then the results will come. However, you can't get any results if you aren't turning up which is all about habit.

3. Go easy on yourself

One day you're doing great and the next you've ate a family size bag of crisps, drank a bottle of wine and haven't seen the inside of a gym in a week. These things happen, what matter's is that you move on and get right back on track.

4. Keep it balanced

A healthy lifestyle is all about balance. Don't deprive yourself, and never feel guilty for the odd treat. A little of what you fancy in moderation is key.

5. Buddy up

Most things in life are better when done with friends - especially if your resolution is to hit the gym more. A gym buddy helps you stay accountable to your promises, helps motivate and encourage you, can remove any workout fears and most importantly makes exercise more fun!

6. Go to class

If one of your goals is fitness related, a great way to make sure you keep it up is my attending a group exercise class. Gym bunnies who attend classes are shown to be 26% less likely to cancel their gym membership.

7. Love your body

One of my favourite motivational quotes is "Be happy with what you have whilst you work for what you want". Rome wasn't built in a day, so enjoy the process and take time to pamper and rest your body, especiallly if you're thinking about upping your exercise.

8. Mix it up

One of the easiest ways to stick to a fitness routine is to add variety! Not only does it keep things interesting, it also keeps your body guessing so you'll continue to see results. One great way to add variety without even trying is with a flexible gym membership (like MoveGB!) That way not only do you get ultimate flexibility when it comes to what activities you choose to do, you also get to workout where you want and when you want.

Remember a sustainable, healthy lifestyle is all about working hard, resting, eating well but also understanding that the odd treat is most definitely good for the soul - so keep going and get ready for your healthiest and happiest year yet!

After 3 years of excess at uni took a serious toll on my waistline and wellbeing, I found that a love for strength training, HIIT and spin classes were key to keeping me healthy and happy. I'm at the forefront of finding out and creating awesome stuff about health, fitness and happiness and when I'm not at work I love nothing more than pizza and prosecco in the sun with friends. What motivates me? Knowing that life is short...
