Which home workout should you try next?

Posted by Sophie Saint

In case you missed it, there has never been more choice when it comes to working out online, both on demand and live-stream. Lockdown or no lockdown, you may well have hit the groove of a nice routine with online fitness classes already but actually MoveGB’s expert home workout instructors always suggest a little change-up now and again

Why should you switch things up

Little experiments with new classes keep things fresh and keep that fitness boredom at bay. Plus it can also help you broaden your range for better whole-body health and by injecting a little variety can actually help to build a better, committed routine. Really? Yep. Just think how many times you’ve found yourself quitting something because it’s boring and monotonous?

There are loads of other benefits to adding some variety to your workouts. Here are just a few:

  • Feeling the dreaded plateau in your workouts? Trying something new can help you climb out of those dips in motivation.
  • You’ll meet new and interesting people with different fitness interests and perspectives - keep your body on its toes!
  • You’ll gain new skills that you can potentially bring back to your usual routine - shake up your routine and see improvements in other areas of your fitness.

Take a little look at some of our expert MoveGB recommendations for workouts based on sessions you may already be in love with:

Which home workout should you try next?

If you like  yoga classes, you might like… An online Barre class!

Barre is an amazing way to take that strength and flexibility you gained from your yoga practice and use it in a way that gets your heart pumping. With elements of ballet, Barre classes (usually between 40 minutes and an hour) help with posture, balance, and muscle-toning.

Online Barre classes are super accessible, and much like yoga, you don’t need loads of fancy equipment to get started. All you have to do is grab a chair to stabilise yourself and get ready to transform from an elegant yogi into a glorious ballerina.

If you like climbing classes, you might want to try… Online core fitness and toning!

Climbing is definitely one activity that it is harder to recreate effectively when you’re stuck at home. You may still be ‘climbing up the walls’, just not in the way you might like.

In the meantime (since you can’t climb your drain pipe for fear of your neighbours calling the police) why not try an online toning class to keep you in tip top climbing shape?

Climbing takes a lot of strength, especially in your upper body and core, so a toning class is the perfect way to keep up – and even increase – that muscle density you need to hoist yourself from one climbing mark to the next.

Online toning classes are hyper-focused on increasing muscle mass through high-rep low/weight exercises. As a climber, this will satisfy your need of keeping strong while also working up a great sweat. As a full body workout, it will also help you when you get back on that climbing wall by strengthening muscles you don’t usually use.

Toning classes come in all shapes and sizes, so look for classes like:

And did you know that yoga and climbing are actually a fantastic match? You might not see the parallels immediately, but take a look at why yoga and climbing are such a popular mix of activities for our MoveGB members, and give it a try if you’re a climb-a-holic missing your hit.

If you like HIIT classes, then you’ll love... BoxFit and Combat Fitness!

Anyone who loves a class labelled with “High Intensity” are always looking for a new and exciting way to take their workouts to the next level.

Combat-based fitness classes are perfect for any HIIT-lover as they combine rigorous cardio workouts with moves from multiple styles of boxing and martial arts, so you’re learning something new while keeping fit. These classes help with coordination, flexibility, speed and strength, so they’re a perfect addition to your usual HIIT routine.

If you like Zumba classes, then you might also love... 80’s Nostalgia Workout, and Twerking!

Zumba is a fun way to keep fit, and no two classes are the same. Now with online Zumba classes, you have even more options to choose from. But if you’re looking for something a little different but just as fun, then twerking and 80’s workouts are the way forward.

Do you miss working out in spandex, leg warmers and giant hair? London-based Synthetics studio are bringing back the glory days of the 80’s! Not only does this workout bring you back to the days of neon-coloured everything, it is a seriously fun cardiovascular workout that works everything from bums to tums.

And speaking of bums, what better way to get your Zumba groove on than by popping that booty? Twerking is a trending style of dance-based fitness class, focusing on moving those glutes as if they had a mind of their own. It’s sexy, it’s fun, it’s empowering. And you will definitely learn some moves that you can take back to Zumba or any other dance class.

So what are you going to try next?

Don’t get us wrong, it’s always important to stay true to your tried and tested workouts, but if you’re feeling yourself getting listless and in want of something new, adding some variety to your workouts will definitely help you stay motivated while you’re stuck at home.

As the founder of MoveGB, Al Rollins says, “The secret to routines that work is to balance variety and convenience”.

Exercise is all about having fun as you get fit and healthy. Experiencing new classes is a great way to keep that fun going and who knows, maybe once you’re out of isolation you’ll keep exploring new ways to stay active and stay active for… LIFE.

Exercise used to always terrify me, until I was forced to face it head-on with an impending surfing trip. I entered the world of MoveGB and never looked back.... Yoga, gym sessions and the odd round with a punchbag opened up my eyes to getting active and feeling awesome from it! Travelling, social media and blogging are what I love both in and out of work. And Turn'd Up dance has become a serious obsession now...
